Bengaluru-based firm Notion Ink had a slow but steady growth ever since it launched its first product, the Adam tablet. While the initial products didn’t receive good feedback, their recent products under the Cain series have been a great value for money. The company has introduced a new 2-in-1 Windows tablet for the Indian market called the Notion Ink Able 10 which has been developed based on consumer feedback.
Design and build
The Able is again a 2-in-1 tablet, but this time Notion Ink has used a solid keyboard with a hinge, unlike the soft one that was bundled with the Cain. This new keyboard adds bulk to the whole device due to its Aluminum build and attaches to the main tablet part via two magnetic hinges and Pogo pin connector. The hinge is very solid and the tablet doesn’t detach easily. The tablet itself is quite thick and has a metal casing with a glass panel on the front. The tablet weighs at 0.65 kg but when you attach the keyboard it goes up to 1.41 kg.
The tablet features a variety of ports including a USB 2.0, a USB 3.0 port, a micro HDMI, a headphone+mic combo jack and a micro USB port for charging and USB OTG. You also get a pair of speakers, front and rear 2MP cameras, a 3G SIM card slot and a micro SD card slot. The power and volume keys are placed on the top edge. The display measures at 10.1-inches and there is a significant bezel which according to the company was unavoidable due to the full sized USB ports. For the price, the Able is a solid looking device and the company says that it can withstand minor drops. It does feel a bit heavy though, almost as much as a standard Ultra book.
DISPLAY AND HARDWARE
The display is an IPS LCD panel measuring at 10.1-inch with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. It’s a fairly sharp looking display but the brightness capability is not up to the mark. The glass piece covering the display is highly glossy and isn’t of very good quality. You get a lot of glare and reflections and it easily gets dirty with fingerprints and smudges. Viewing angles aren’t very impressive either as there is colour shift when you view it beyond a certain angle. The company said that it is going to use a better and higher resolution display for an upcoming 12-inch product.
The Notion Ink Able 10 runs on an Intel X5-Z8300 quad-core processor which is a Cherry Trail chipset with a base speed of 1.32GHz with burst speed going up to 1.8GHz. The graphics are handled by an Intel HD based GPU offering up to 500MHz frequency. The processor is said to provide 75 percent performance of an Intel Core M processor. There is 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 64GB of internal storage with users getting an option of choosing between an SSD and eMMC. Storage can be expanded further using a microSD card of up to 128GB.
In terms of connectivity you get Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G, the variety of USB ports (USB 3.0, USB 2.0, microUSB) and a micro HDMI out port. The battery pack is rated at 8,100mAh which is said to last 6-7 hours and charges in about 5-hours.
VERDICT
Notion Ink is progressing towards becoming a strong identity in the 2-in-1 tablet space and with the Able 10 the company is trying hard to regain the hype it created, and later lost, when it came into existence. They aren’t chasing the Surface or other high-end players, but are committed to provide an affordable solution to students, accountants and first time PC users. The Able offers respectable set of specifications and features with a cost of Rs 24,990 which sounds like a justified price .
