‘Moto by Lenovo’ the all new budget phone, Lenovo
and Moto has finally launched the Moto G4 and G4 Plus in India, pitched as
budget benchmark devices offering a pure Android experience. G4 has the look
for those spectating at a balanced smartphone while G4 Plus features a little advanced
and secure smartphone.
Design and display
As per the design is concerned it
is really a slim device, with a not so impressive silver plastic frame and
white rear panel. The volume rocker and the power button are located on the
right, whereas the micro USB port is at the bottom. The textured back panel
feels good in the hand but doesn't make for a firm hold. The top edge is home
to the 3.5mm audio jack. Moto G4 Plus supports dual-sim functionality and
despite being thinner than previous devices in the G series, packs a sizeable
3,000mAh battery and measuring 153x77x7.9mm and weigh 155g. They also have
exactly the same screen size, which this year is a 5.5inch display with a “1920x1080”
resolution. That's a huge step up from the previous Moto G, as this only had a
5inch, “1280x720” display.
Sunlight legibility is very good and the display manages to produce punchy colours and good black levels. Gorilla Glass 3 is also present for added protection. The rounded metal frame coupled with the rubber back cover offers good ergonomics and grip. The Moto G4 Plus ditches the trademark bottom grille of the Moto G series for a fingerprint sensor (looks like Samsung Model by MOTO). It's not a physical button but it is slightly raised to help you find it by touch alone. The sensor can recognise your fingerprints from any angle and apart from a few intermittent misreads, it works very well all the time.
Above the display lie the mono
speaker, 5MP front-facing camera and the usual array of sensors. The speaker's
audio output is decent, but definitely not as impressive as that from the dual
front-firing speakers on the second generation Moto G. Imagine watching a movie
in IMAX quality, but the sound only comes from one side; that's exactly how it
sounds. The back consists of a 16MP camera with dual-tone LED flash and laser
focus. A rather flimsy back panel can be easily pried off to reveal dual
micro-sim slots and a microSD card slot. That said, the battery on the G4 Plus
cannot be removed. Overall, the fit and finish of the Moto G4 Plus is not bad,
but it certainly could've been a bit better
Performance and camera
Even though the G4 Plus's 16MP
rear camera and 5MP front-facing shooter seem good on paper, they didn't really
live up to our expectations. There was noticeable distortion while taking pictures
and low light images turned out to be just average. We have seen better images
from similar priced devices. Having said that, the laser focus proved to be
really fast and the camera focused on an object as soon as we pointed at it.
Phase detection and auto focus helped further. In a nutshell, Moto G4 Plus's
cameras would be more than adequate for the majority of users. As far as
battery life is concerned, the Moto G4 Plus's 3,000 mAh battery easily lasted
us about a day of moderate to heavy usage. Thanks to Turbo Charging, all you
need to do is plug in the charger for about 15 minutes and you're good to go
for at least 6 hours claimed by the company (Around 4 Hours atleast). During
our test, the phone handled the day to day tasks really well. Opening multiple
apps and randomly switching between them wasn't a problem at all. The phone
handled intensive games pretty easily too. However, it did heat up a little
after an hour or two of continuous gaming but afterall these are small pieces
of portable-computers.
SOME PICS CAPTURED BY IT
The retail box contains a
TurboPower charger (25W) and a headset. The wall charger is not modular so you
will need a separate USB cable for data transfer. The headset looks and feels a
bit cheap, in our opinion, and it didn't fit very well in our ears. In terms of
power, the Moto G4 Plus uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 617 SoC, which is an octa-core
chip running at 1.5GHz. You also get 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage.
The phone will also be available with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage at a lower
price. Moto G4 Plus is a 4G capable smartphone and it latched on to the
networks fairly easily during our tests. Overall, call quality was great, even
in areas of problematic coverage such as elevators. Other specifications include 4G LTE (Category
4), Bluetooth 4.1 Low Energy, dual-band Wi-Fi b/g/n, GPS, GLONASS, USB-OTG, and
FM radio. NFC is not present which is a drawback for those who would like to
control their AC’s and TV by their Android.
The new Moto G4 Plus is an
absolute delight. It is one of the best budget friendly smartphones in the
market you can get. The design is somewhat good and new added features work
exceptionally well. However, not everything is outstanding with the G4 Plus.
Motorola has done away with a few useful features that were present in its
predecessors, most important being water-resistance (which we absolutely
adored). So you colud actually give it a big yes as far as budget and hind end
phone is concerned at the cost of Rs.14999 and Rs.13499 only/-
